HP Toner & Cartridge Guide for Pakistan
Most people in Pakistan choose a printer by its sticker price and then discover the real bill: toner. Two HP printers that cost the same can have a 3× difference in cost per page, purely because of which cartridge they take. This guide lists the cartridge number and rated yield for the HP models we sell and see most often in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, then explains the honest trade-off between refilling, compatible cartridges and genuine HP toner.
Find your cartridge number first
Open the front cover of your printer — the cartridge itself, or a sticker inside the door, shows the HP number (e.g. '26A', '107A'). HP also uses different numbers for the same cartridge in different regions, so a printer imported from the US may list a sibling number (58A instead of 59A, 142A instead of 150A). When in doubt, bring the old cartridge to the shop or message us a photo and we'll confirm it in a minute.
HP mono LaserJet cartridge table
| Printer | Cartridge | Rated yield* | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP Laser 107a / 107w | 107A (W1107A) | ~1,000 pages | Same cartridge family as 105A/106A — regional chip. Low upfront, high cost per page. |
| HP LaserJet 108a / 108w | 110A toner (W1110A) + 112A imaging drum (W1112A) | ~1,000 pages toner | Separate drum design: you replace only toner most of the time, so cost per page is a bit lower than the 107 series. |
| HP Laser MFP 135a / 135w / 137fnw | 107A family (W1107A / 106A / 105A) | ~1,000 pages | Same all-in-one chipped cartridge as the 107a/107w; refillers replace the chip. |
| HP Laser MFP 136a / 136w / 139fnw | 110A toner (W1110A) + 112A drum (W1112A) — confirm on sticker | ~1,000 pages toner | Same separate-drum system as the 108 series. Toner-only refills are cheap. |
| HP LaserJet MFP M141a / M141w | 150A (W1500A) | ~975 pages | Also sold as 142A in some regions. Chipped. |
| HP LaserJet M211dw | 136A (W1360A) / 136X | ~1,150 / ~2,600 | Buy the X (high-yield) if you print a lot. |
| HP LaserJet P1606dn, M1536dnf | 78A (CE278A) | ~2,100 pages | Widely refilled in Pakistan, cheap and reliable. |
| HP LaserJet P2035, P2055dn | 05A (CE505A) / 05X | ~2,300 / ~6,500 | Very common; the 05X drops cost per page a lot. |
| HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn | 80A (CF280A) / 80X | ~2,700 / ~6,900 | Colour touchscreen model; the 80X high-yield is the economical choice. |
| HP LaserJet Pro M402dne / M402dn | 26A (CF226A) / 26X | ~3,100 / ~9,000 | One of the cheapest-per-page office cartridges available locally. |
| HP LaserJet Pro M404dn | 59A (CF259A) / 59X | ~3,000 / ~10,000 | 58A/58X in some imported units. Genuine has anti-clone chip. |
| HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdn | 30A (CF230A) / 30X + 32A drum | ~1,600 / ~3,500 | Separate imaging drum (32A, ~23,000 pages). |
| HP LaserJet Enterprise M507 | 89A (CF289A) / 89X / 89Y | ~5,000 / ~10,000 / ~20,000 | Enterprise-class — excellent cost per page. |
| HP LaserJet Enterprise M608 | 37A (CF237A) / 37X / 37Y | ~11,000 / ~25,000 / ~41,000 | For serious volume; the 37Y is the cheapest per page of anything here. |
| HP LaserJet Enterprise Flow MFP M527 | 87A (CF287A) / 87X | ~9,000 / ~18,000 | Office MFP workhorse. |
| Samsung Xpress M2029 | MLT-D111S | ~1,000 pages | Cheap compatibles widely available. |
HP colour laser cartridge table
| Printer | Cartridge set | Rated yield* | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP Color Laser 150a | 117A (W2070A–W2073A) | ~1,000 black / ~700 colour | Small cartridges — fine for light colour use only. |
| HP LaserJet Pro 200 Color MFP M276n | 131A (CF210A–213A) / 131X black | ~1,600 black / ~1,800 colour | Older but toner is common and cheap in Pakistan. |
| HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277n | 201A (CF400A–403A) / 201X | ~1,500 black / ~1,400 colour | 201X roughly doubles the yield. |
| HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdn | 203A (CF540A–543A) / 203X | ~1,400 / ~1,300 colour | 202A in US-spec units. |
| HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M653 | 655A / 656X | ~12,500 black / ~10,500 colour | Enterprise yields — very low cost per colour page. |
| HP Color LaserJet Enterprise Flow MFP M577 | 508A / 508X | ~6,000 / ~12,500 | Office colour MFP. |
| HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M855 (A3) | 826A (CF310A–313A) | ~29,000 black / ~31,500 colour | Print-shop class. |
*Rated yield is HP's ISO figure at 5% page coverage — a typical text page. Dense documents, logos and graphics use more toner, so real-world yield is often 20–30% lower.
Refill vs compatible vs genuine — the honest answer
- Genuine HP — best print quality and reliability, no chip problems, but the most expensive. Worth it for colour lasers and for anyone printing client-facing documents.
- Compatible (new third-party cartridge) — usually 30–50% of the genuine price. Quality varies a lot by brand; a good compatible prints almost identically, a bad one leaks and streaks. Buy from a shop that will take it back.
- Refill (your empty cartridge refilled with bulk toner) — cheapest per page, and for older models like the 85A/78A/05A/26A it works well. On chipped cartridges (107A family, 110A, 150A, 136A, 59A) the chip must be replaced or reset, otherwise the printer refuses to print.
Rule of thumb for Pakistan: mono text printing → good compatible or refill is fine. Colour or client documents → genuine or a premium compatible. And always refill before the cartridge is bone-dry — running a cartridge empty can damage the drum.
What toner really costs per page
Divide the cartridge price by its yield. A small 1,000-page cartridge that costs, say, PKR 4,000 as a compatible is PKR 4 per page. A 26X that costs more upfront but yields 9,000 pages can land under PKR 1.50 per page. That is exactly why a certified imported workgroup laser like the M402dne or M404dn often beats a brand-new entry printer on total cost within the first year — even though the new one looks cheaper on the shelf. Our cheapest printers to run guide walks through the maths.
Is 'toner low' actually empty?
No. HP's low-toner warning fires with plenty of toner left. Take the cartridge out, rock it gently side to side a few times, and put it back — you'll usually get another few hundred pages. If prints go faded on one side only, see our HP LaserJet problems and fixes guide.

Frequently asked questions
Which toner does the HP 107a / 107w use?
The HP 107A cartridge (W1107A), rated at about 1,000 pages. It belongs to the same cartridge family as the 105A and 106A — the difference is the regional chip. Note the HP 108a/108w and Laser MFP 136a/136w are different: they use the 110A toner plus a separate 112A imaging drum.
Which toner does the HP M404dn use?
The HP 59A (CF259A, ~3,000 pages) or 59X (CF259X, ~10,000 pages). Units imported from the US may list the 58A/58X instead — the cartridges are the same shape but the chip differs by region.
Is it safe to refill HP toner cartridges in Pakistan?
For older non-chipped cartridges (85A, 78A, 05A, 80A, 26A) refilling is common, safe and cheap when done by a proper shop. Chipped cartridges (107A family, 110A, 150A, 136A, 59A) need a replacement chip as well as toner.
Why is my printer saying toner is low when it just printed fine?
HP's low-toner warning is conservative. Remove the cartridge, rock it gently side to side, reinsert it and keep printing — most cartridges have hundreds of pages left at the warning.
