The problem is the naming: 135a, 135w, 136a, 136w, 137fnw, 139fnw, M141a, M141w. All are 20 ppm, 1200 dpi mono lasers with a flatbed scanner. What differs is Wi-Fi, whether there's a document feeder and fax, and — importantly for running cost — which cartridge system they use.

How to read the names
- a = USB only · w = Wi-Fi · n = Ethernet (LAN) · f = fax. So 'fnw' = fax + LAN + Wi-Fi.
- 135 / 137 use the single chipped 107A cartridge (toner + drum in one). 136 / 139 (and the 108 printers) use a 110A toner with a separate 112A imaging drum — usually slightly cheaper per page, and toner-only refills are cheap locally. M141 uses the newer 150A all-in-one cartridge.
- The 'M141' is HP's newest and smallest chassis; the 135/136/137/139 are the previous, very well-proven design.
